Law Clerk Applicants
All Law Clerk positions with the Supreme Court of New Mexico are full-time, at-will positions. Generally, law students apply for a clerkship during their second year of law school for a term that would begin in September of the following year after graduation. Each Justice accepts applications to serve as a law clerk, and terms offered may be for one or two years.
A Law Clerk application should be sent for each Justice the applicant intends to apply with. Law Clerk applications should be sent to the attention of the Supreme Court Chief Clerk in a consolidated PDF. Letters of recommendation may be sent to the Chief Clerk separately. Both the Law Clerk application and the letter of recommendation may be emailed to nmsupremecourtclerk@nmcourts.gov or sent by regular mail to the following address:

All applications must include the following:
- letter of interest
- resume
- current law school transcript and most recent grades
- three letters of recommendation
- one writing sample
The New Mexico Supreme Court is no longer accepting applications for the 2025 clerkship term
Externship Applications
The Supreme Court Justices, the Clerk’s Office, and the Office of Supreme Court Counsel accept applications for externship opportunities throughout the year. Externships are unpaid, but the Court will work with extern applicants who wish to use their externship work for school credit. For more information about externship opportunities, applicants may contact the Clerk of Court or send a letter of interest and resume.
